Lawrence Scott Lofgren
Attorney at Law

I've been practicing bankruptcy law in Seattle since 2003. My professional goals are to serve consumer bankruptcy clients, while expanding to other areas of law and capitalizing on my fluency in the Spanish language. I am able to attract a fair number of Spanish speaking clients at Legal Helpers without specifically targeting that group in the advertisements. From those contacts, I find I get a significant number of referrals. I graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1988. I graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1992 and was admitted to practice law in Illinois in November of that year. I was employed at the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois from March, 1994 to July 1999, with a year off to work in Madrid, Spain. Since 1999, I've worked for two major, multi-state bankruptcy firms: Macey & Aleman (Legal Helpers) of Chicago, Illinois; and Weinstein and Riley of Seattle. I also operated my own solo practice for a little more than a year. In October of 2007, my firm was starting to get off the ground but I decided that the stream of income from being an office manager represented a more attractive option at that point. I have always wanted to work for a smaller, local firm - the workload isn't my most important consideration.

I was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1966. However, I spent most of my youth growing up in Springfield, Illinois. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1984, I attended the University of Illinois where I majored in Communications and minored in Philosophy and Political Science. I graduated from the U of I in 1988. In college I developed a strong interest in mastering the Spanish language. After graduating from college, I traveled in South America, living in Ecuador for a few months and teaching English. I also traveled through Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Bolivia.

I enrolled at Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1989 and graduated in 1992. After passing the bar exam in July, 1992, I took a six week total immersion Spanish course in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. I moved to Chicago in 1992. While new to Chicago, I volunteered at the Legal Clinic for the Disabled and worked at a small law office in the mostly Spanish speaking Pilsen neighborhood. In 1994 I was hired by the the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois in Chicago as its Intake Director. At the ACLU, I gathered facts for major civil liberties cases. I also recruited, trained and supervised law student interns. At the ACLU, I became familiar with a wide range of legal problems and individual situations. In 1997, I moved to Madrid, Spain and taught English classes to Spanish attorneys and corporate executives. In Madrid I lived with Spanish, Ecuadorian and Nicaraguan roomates and became even more fluent in Spanish. After spending a year in Madrid, I returned to the United States in 1998, and was hired back as the Intake Director by the ACLU of Illinois. I started practicing consumer bankruptcy law in 1999. By 2001, I was managing the very profitable Rockford, Illinois branch of the multi-state Chicago firm Macey, Chern and Diab. I worked in Chicago, but spent Fridays in Rockford, where I regularly appeared in court in the morning to aggressively represent Debtors in Chapter 13 cases. On Friday afternoons I met with a high volume of new clients. During the rest of the week I met with new clients and advised existing ones. I also regularly attended Chapter 7 creditors' meetings in downtown Chicago and trained and supervised a team of attorneys at these meetings. In 2003, I was offered a job at the Seattle firm of Weinstein and Riley where I represented major credit card companies and other creditors in U.S. Bankruptcy court and Washington State Court. I worked at Weinstein and Riley for two and a half years. In 2006, I opened my own firm,The Law Office of Larry Lofgren. While building this practice, I was recruited by Macey and Aleman to manage their Seattle bankruptcy practice. After gaining experience filing hundreds of cases at this office, I accepted a job at the Law Offices of Jason Newcombe.
